Witnessing and Certifying Signatures

The notary observes the eligible document being signed, verifies the signer's identity and completes the appropriate notarial certificate when legally permitted.

What this service involves

For this act the document must be signed in the notary's presence. Please do not sign in advance. Identification is reviewed first, then the signature is made and the notarial certificate is completed.

  • Forms that state the signature must be witnessed
  • Agreements signed at the appointment
  • Authorizations requiring signature witnessing

What to bring

  • Current, acceptable government-issued identification
  • The complete, unsigned document (unless the act allows a prior signature)
  • All required signers, present at the same appointment
  • Any witnesses the document may require

If the document was already signed, a different notarial act may be required, or the act may not be available.

Not every document can be notarized. The document type, identification, the signer's presence, willingness and awareness, and applicable New Jersey requirements must be reviewed first.

A notarial act does not prove that the contents of a document are truthful, accurate or legally valid.
